On this 1 1/2 hour beach walk, Capt. Skip will explain where the sand, water and salt came from. The first half of the trip, we'll do some experiments to prove bouyancy and salinity. The second half, we'll identify dune plants, birds, shells and whatever else we can find on the beach.
You will learn how much salt is in sea water. We will find out and prove if we are more or less bouyant in sea water or fresh water by doing some simple experiments.
We will collect and identify shells. How is a shell made ? Learn what a bi-valve is. What is a univalve ? Why do many of the shells we collect have a little hole drilled in them?
Capt. Skip will try and answer these questions and more.
Capt. Skip will also talk about crabs, jellyfish, dolphin, bull sharks, beach mice, butterflies, and sea turtles.

The Alabama River Clean Water Partnership and 5 Rivers, Alabama’s Delta Resource Center will display 12 beautiful, six-foot long fishing lures at the 5 Rivers Center in Spanish Fort through October 20, 2008. The lures were originally part of a city art project in the Montgomery area that was designed to highlight the beauty of the Alabama River and its importance to the state. The lures have now traveled downstream, where they are schooling in the 5 Rivers Delta Center’s Apalachee Exhibit Hall. This beautiful display is intended to raise awareness of Alabama’s tremendous waterways and educate people on how to protect the Mobile Bay and the rivers and creeks that feed it. Ten of the 12 lures are available for purchase with a price of $1000 or best offer. All proceeds from the sale benefit the Alabama Clean Water Partnership or go their website here. Purchase offers will be received through October 18th.

The Alabama Gulf Coast is a critical stopover point as migratory birds return from Central and South America. Banding hours are from before dawn to mid-afternoon, depending on the flow of birds. Bring a lawn chair, binoculars and inquisitive mind but leave the pets at home.
