2025 Winter Showcase Series: This Southern Metropolis - Life in Antebellum Mobile
From: 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM
As part of the 2025 Winter Showcase Series presented by Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism, please join us for this presentation from historian, author and Director of Historic Blakely State Park.
This Southern Metropolis -Life in Antebellum Mobile: Based on visitor descriptions of antebellum Mobile, Alabamas physical and social environment, this book captures a place and time that is particular to Gulf Coast history. Mobiles foundational era is a period in which the city transformed from a struggling colonial outpost into one of the nations most significant economic powerhouses, largely owing to the cotton trade and the labor of enslaved people. On the eve of the Civil War, Mobile ranked as the fourth most populous community in what would soon become the Confederacy, and within the Gulf Coast region, it stood second only to New Orleans in population, wealth, and influence.
Mike will offer a special rate for attendees who would like to purchase his book for $25 (the list price is $27.95). Cash, checks and credit cards are accepted.
